Learning to Embrace Pressure

As parents, we naturally want to protect our children. We want them to be happy, confident and successful. We want to see them enjoy their sport, have fun and walk away from every game feeling good about themselves.

But sometimes, in our efforts to protect them, we can unintentionally take away some of the very experiences that help them grow.

Here’s something worth thinking about:

Pressure isn't always a bad thing. In fact, it can be one of the greatest opportunities for growth.

One of the things that separates good players from great players, and good leaders from great leaders, is their ability to handle pressure.

When things get difficult, when the game is close, when the decision needs to be made or when something doesn’t go to plan, that’s when the real learning happens.

That’s the moment a child has the opportunity to step outside their comfort zone.

It’s the moment they learn to trust themselves, make a decision, take a risk and back their abilities.   And sometimes they’ll get it right. Sometimes they won’t.

Both outcomes are just as valuable!

If they take the shot and score, fantastic! If they take the shot and miss, that’s fantastic too. Because they had the courage to take it in the first place.

If they make a mistake, they learn. If they lose the ball, they reset. If they come up against a stronger opponent, they discover what they need to work on.

These are not moments we should be trying to eliminate. These are the moments we should be celebrating.

Parents, forget the scoreboard for a moment.

Sometimes we’re so focused on the result, the division, the wins and losses, or whether our child is playing in the right competition that we miss the really special stuff happening right in front of us.

We're missing the moment they find the courage to try something new.
We're missing the moment they make a decision for themselves.
We're missing the moment they push through something they found difficult last week.
We're missing the moment they realise they're capable of more than they thought.

And those moments are worth so much more than the final score.

We don’t need to make every competition easier, remove every challenge or ensure our children never experience disappointment. We need to give them the opportunity to experience these things in a safe, supportive environment, knowing that they have people in their corner regardless of the outcome.

Because the goal isn’t to raise children who only feel confident when everything is going their way.

The goal is to raise children who believe in themselves even when things get tough.

So next time you watch your child play, forget the scoreboard for a little while. Watch their courage. Watch their decisions. Watch them take a chance.

Celebrate the attempt just as much as the achievement.  And remember, pressure isn’t something we should always run away from. Sometimes, it’s exactly where our children need to be.

Let them

Have the challenge.

Let them

Make the mistakes.

Let them

Discover just how capable they really are.

That's where growth happens. That's where confidence is built.

And that's where future leaders begin.
